What to know about escalators & moving walks
Escalators solve a different problem from elevators. Where an elevator batches passengers and asks them to wait, an escalator moves a continuous stream with no wait at all — which is why retail, transit and public buildings rely on them at the levels where footfall is heaviest.
That continuous duty is also what makes maintenance non-negotiable. An escalator runs whenever the building is open, and its step chains, handrails, combs and brakes wear accordingly. Most escalator incidents trace back to deferred servicing rather than to sudden failure.
Moving walks apply the same principle across long horizontal distances, and on inclines allow trolleys to be moved safely between levels.
