Installation

Why installation matters

Installation begins long before anything is lifted into a shaft. The decisive work is the survey and specification, because the shaft dimensions, pit depth, headroom and machine space determine what equipment can physically be installed — and those are usually fixed in concrete by the time anyone looks closely.

On a new build the useful moment is during design, when a traffic analysis can still influence how many shafts are provided and how large they are. On a retrofit the constraint runs the other way: the structure exists, and equipment must be selected to suit it.

Commissioning is the part clients tend to underestimate. Testing safety gear, verifying levelling accuracy, proving door protection and setting the control parameters is what separates a lift that has been installed from one that is fit to carry passengers.

  3. Installation

    Guide rails, machine, car, landing doors and control equipment installed and aligned.

    Safety devices tested, levelling and door protection verified, control parameters set.

  5. Handover

    Documentation issued and the maintenance programme started.

Common questions

How long does elevator installation take?

Duration depends on the number of units, travel height, equipment type and how ready the builder's work is. Shaft readiness is the most common cause of delay: installation cannot begin until the shaft is complete, true and dry, and power is available.

What does an elevator installation project involve?

A survey, equipment specification, mechanical and electrical installation, testing and commissioning, then handover and the start of a maintenance programme. On a new build the survey ideally happens during design, when shaft provision can still be adjusted.

What needs to be ready before installation starts?

The shaft must be complete and within tolerance, the pit waterproofed, headroom and machine space available, scaffolding or hoisting access arranged, and a suitable power supply present. A pre-installation survey confirms all of this.
