What this building type demands

Office buildings are the classic case for traffic analysis. The design condition is the morning up-peak, when a large share of the building's population arrives within a short window, and a group that copes comfortably at midday can queue badly at nine.

Shaft provision is fixed early and effectively permanently. Adding a lift to a completed tower is rarely practical, so the number and size of shafts is among the few genuinely irreversible decisions in the design — which is why the analysis belongs at design stage rather than procurement.

Buildings also change after handover. Tenant fit-outs alter floor populations, and a building let to a single occupier behaves differently from one split across many. Equipment that can be re-tuned as occupancy changes ages better than equipment that cannot.
